Only 1,626 of this model were made by Simeon North between 1813 and 1815, only 1,000 were delivered to the Navy. This makes it rarer than the Model 1799 North & Cheney martial pistol, as less were made. The original government contract called for 20,000 of these but due to harsh recoil and large size, this was revised. This contract is also important because it was the first time that a gun maker offered a product with interchangeable parts. Round smoothbore steel barrel stamped "P/US" on left side of breech and "HHP" on right side, above touch hole. Flat beveled lockplate with rounded tail, brass pan, and reinforced cock, center of lockplate stamped "S. NORTH/U./eagle/S./MIDDLN. CON." Standard Model 1813 steel furniture, including a steel belt hook. Walnut half-stock with Wickham band and wooden ramrod, left side stamped behind belt hook with inspectors mark "ET" for inspector Edward Trenchard. Very good condition, steel components have been lightly cleaned and retain grey patina with some minor freckling. Original flintlock configuration. Stock very good, a few scattered marks and a small sliver replaced above back of lock tang. This is a fine example of a very scarce and early American martial pistol.
