Stevens 44 action. This is one of the rarest actions made by Stevens, featuring etched engraving showing a dog on point on left side and a deer head on right. Both vignettes are surrounded by a foliate design. The action was originally case colored. Double set triggers and loop lever. Buttstock is pistol grip style, checkered, with a cheekpiece. Checkering is a coarse pattern. Material is a fairly plain walnut. Steel buttplate, No. 3 heavy Swiss, was originally case colored. Checkered forearm of the one screw style. Barrel is No. 3 weight and is serial numbered to the action. A number 1 is stamped under the forearm. Barrel also stamped J. Stevens Arms and Tool etc., as well as the caliber, .28-30. Barrel is half octagon. Barrel has been relined to .22 caliber. Front sight is a Lyman globe and the rear sight is a Stevens-Vernier with windage. CONDITION: Only some of case color remains on the action. Buttstock is very fine with just a few dings, dents and scratches from handling over the years. Considerable case color remains on buttplate. Forearm shows considerable wear from handling, retaining approximately 60% of the varnish. Most blue remains on barrel, except at muzzle, where the blue is almost totally missing, probably from some cleaning solvent years ago. A nice, lightweight little rifle and a true Stevens rarity in very presentable condition. TR CORRECTION: Gun is a Model 49.
