Burnside marked Model 1865 carbines were altered to infantry rifles by the Springfield Armory in 1871. New 32 - 1/2" round barrels chambered in .50 caliber with three groove rifling, Stabler cut-off, full forend fastened by two barrel bands and an iron ramrod with ribbed head were added. Serial numbers were marked at the breech of barrel that corresponded with the original receiver number. This example, serial number 33292, shows all those features. ESA inspection cartouch clearly visible on left side of stock designating Springfield Armory modifications. CONDITION: Fine overall with traces of case color on receiver turning a pleasing brown/grey patina. Barrel shows considerable blue turning a blue/grey patina. Wood is excellent showing minimum wear. Bore is excellent. Overall a very clean and attractive Indian Wars period rifle. Only 1,108 of the Burnside manufactured Spencer Carbines were altered by the Springfield Armory. -MKS-
