Most commonly known among collectors as the "Root Model" after Elisha K. Root, noted designer for Colt. This sidehammer, serial number 17829, was manufactured in 1857. 3 - 1/2" octagon barrel with pointing hand motif marked "COLTS PT./1855" and "ADDRESS COL. COLT/HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A." Cylinder with roll die Indian/cabin fight scene, marked "COLTS PATENT" with matching serial number 17829. Blue finish with one piece varnish walnut grips. Housed in a walnut case fitted in the partition style with burgundy velour interior. Includes correct "E. Pluribus Unum" marked powder flask, brass bullet mold, and Eley Bro's percussion cap tin. CONDITION: Revolver fine overall with approximately 90% original bright high polish blue remaining on the frame. Cylinder mostly brown/grey patina with moderate pitting around nipples. Strong cylinder scene. Hammer and loading lever shows most original case colors. Grips are excellent plus with most all original varnish remaining showing little wear. Case has a couple deep scratches on lid and scattered dents overall. Case interior shows minimum fading with moderate wear. Flask is excellent with only a couple of small dents. Bullet mold has a light mustard patina with scattered dents and scratches. Overall a high condition and very attractive early model sidehammer. -MKS-
