This magnificent gilt-painted wooden eagle was a special commission by renowned carver Don Park of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. It is signed on the back and dated 1974. Made specifically for the now defunct International Village in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This eagle was the centerpiece of the International Village Theater, which was built in the style of a 19th century United States sailing vessel. The eagle was crafted using the same painstaking period techniques, by laminating multiple layers of wood to achieve the proper thickness, and contours, much like a ship's mast head. The eagle was mounted to the stern of the ship. For the past 20 years, this majestic bird has been on display at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds Army Base in Edgewater, Maryland. In 1974, the commission cost was an impressive $3,000. Measures 55" from wing tip to wing tip and 51" head to tail. CONDITION: Very good overall with a period appearance. Paint shows some minor losses and wood shows scattered age cracks and minor areas of separation between layers. DMG
