Scarce and important map of New York City that was printed in Universal Magazine in 1776 shortly after the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. This magazine issue plan is considered to be the second earliest obtainable map of New York City. After the Revolutionary war commenced, there was renewed interest in the American colonies throughout Britain. Early in the war, the British experienced great success especially with their New York Campaign in which the Continental Army fled New York City. This map was issued as a result of the renewed interest of the American Colonies especially because of Britain's successful conquests thus far. The map illustrates the lower part of modern day Manhattan from around 14th street to the Battery. Also pictured are significant portions of Brooklyn which is just across the east river. There is also a legend that was a cut from the magazine and identifies points of interest around New York Island. CONDITION: The map exhibits scattered foxing and there is evidence of water damage, especially around the corners of the frame. The map exhibits slight fading and has yellowed over time. The frame is damaged and taped around the back as reinforcement. Despite the wear, this map is still a very significant piece of American history. Overall good. PROVENANCE: Ex-Lattimer Collection.
