1845 dated Jenks Model 1841 Navy Carbine in standard configuration, with 24" round browned barrel in .54 caliber smoothbore, brass mountings, integral front sight on barrel band, and rear sight notch on loading lever. Marked near breech "USN / RC / P / 1845". Unaltered round loading aperture. Originally the Jenks carbines were manufactured with these circular loading apertures for use with loose powder and ball. Before the Civil War, they were modified to an oval aperture for use with paper cartridges, as well as rifled at time of conversion. Walnut stock with brass buttplate bearing 2 faint cartouches on left side. No provision for carbine sling ring. CONDITION: Good, with barrel turned a heavy brown patina and scattered storage marks throughout. Stock has crack on left side of tang and section of replaced wood on right side near wrist, and has been lightly sanded. Mechanically fine. Bore is dark.
