Per included factory research, this rifle shipped July 18, 1892. Rifle sports a blued round barrel with later 2-line patent address with 1889 and 1893 patents as is traditionally seen on Model 1894 rifles. Lyman hunting front sight, and folding Marbles U-notch rear, with additional tang mounted aperture sight. Nickel plated receiver engraved in the No. 1 factory pattern with slightly more coverage. Left side features a vignette with a proud buck flanked by panels of tight scroll and scroll borders. Right side has similar panels of scroll. Conrad Ulrich was Marlin's primary engraver between 1881 and 1910. Hand checkered walnut forend and pistol grip stock with crescent butt plate. The full matching serial number is stamped in the stock channel. Factory records indicate this rifle shipped as a .44 with very rare 22" octagon barrel and pistol grip stock. Barrel was presumably changed, possibly by the factory. Engraving appears factory. Brophy notes that surviving factory records do not include notations of factory engraving with any regularity. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel retains the vast majority of its factory blue with some fading and toning. Magazine tube has largely drifted to patina with blue preserved in the protected areas. Frame has some minor flaking and bubbling, remaining largely bright. The majority of the nitre blue is displayed on the loading gate. Stocks are good with grain checking and scattered light impressions. Checkering shows wear, especially on the underside of the forend. Very fine, mirror bore. Fine mechanics.
