The Army General Staff Identification Badge was first proposed in 1931 by General Douglas MacArthur during his tenure as Army Chief of Staff. It was officially approved and announced on August 23rd, 1933 in War Department Circular No. 45, establishing it as the distinctive emblem for officers serving on the Army General Staff. This example is an original first production badge manufactured by Bailey, Banks & Biddle in solid 14k gold, the earliest and most desirable type, produced in the 1930s. The workmanship is exceptional, with crisp detail and high quality translucent enamel. The badge measures 2" across and weighs 26.4 grams on a jeweler’s scale. Intact enamel. Under magnification, two leaves (at approximately the 10 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions) show very fine hairlines in the green translucent enamel, not visible to the naked eye and typical of early BB&B production. This is the earliest issue of the U.S. Army General Staff Badge, created in 1933 as the official identification badge awarded by the Chief of Staff of the Army to officers assigned to general staff duty. Early BB&B 14k examples are scarce and highly sought after for their quality and historical significance. Comes with a copy of a Bailey, Banks & Biddle pamphlet advertising the "War Department General Staff Decoration". CONDITION: Excellent.
