John Myers was born in 1757 and was a silversmith in Philadelphia who was active c. 1785-1804. This silver hilted saber is hallmarked by Myers twice on the top of the guard "I. Myers" contained inside a rectangle. The sword features a 33 - 1/2" curved blade with wide fuller. The blade is decorated for 25% of its length with gold inlaid scrollwork decorations. A gray patina with scattered blemishes is exhibited throughout the length of the blade but the embellishments remain prominent. The guard features an eye shaped cutout with diamond decoration at center. Stirrup knucklebow retains its shape with slight wobble where it connects to the pillow pommel. A fluted ivory grip is contained between the pommel and silver ferrule. There are scattered hairlines on the grip but it remains solid and displays a pleasing honey patina. The center of the grip is adorned with a silver ring that depicts a federal eagle. The hilt exhibits an older cleaning but a pleasing patina has set in. CONDITION: Good.
