As one of the earliest silver dollars struck by the United States Mint, it embodies the nation’s first successful attempt at large-scale federal silver coinage. The Flowing Hair design was short-lived, produced only in 1794 and 1795, before being replaced later in 1795 by the Draped Bust type. This example is the Three Leaves reverse variety, identified by the three leaves beneath each wing of the eagle. While more available than the Two Leaves variety, the Three Leaves issue remains a cornerstone type coin and the most accessible entry point into early U.S. silver dollar collecting.
