Very rare 1874 Pattern Swivel Holster for the Colt Cavalry Single Action or S&W Schofield revolvers. The Pattern 1874 Swivel holster has a distinctive hanger with brass swivel riveted to the holster body. The swivel enables the holster to pivot 45 degrees and accommodate the movement of a cavalryman. The holster is constructed with black bridle leather with a narrow flap that is not embossed with the standard "US" oval. The flap has a single hole and is secured by a brass finial. The loop is affixed to the body by a Hoffman swivel. The back of the hanger is stamped "WATERVLIET / ARSENAL". Field use indicated that the swivel was delicate and easily broken, therefore most of the holsters were modified or replaced. Surviving, un-altered, examples of the 1874 pattern holster are seldom encountered by collectors. The holster remains intact with light crazing throughout and scattered flaked areas. This example is featured on page 95 of US Military Holsters and Related Accoutrements by Edward Scott Meadows. CONDITION: Good.
