In 1897, industry pioneer George M. Hendee started a bicycle production company called the Hendee Manufacturing Company with co-founder and lead engineer Oscar Hedstrom. George Hendee opened the company’s first factory in downtown Springfield, Missouri in 1901. For the next 50 years, Indian saw unprecedented expansion and growth in motorcycle production and innovation, with foundational leadership in creating a true American riding culture. In 1923, the company changed its name from The Hendee Manufacturing Company to The Indian Motocycle Company, with no ‘R’ in ‘motorcycle’ when the word was first used with the name ‘Indian’. The 1906 Indian Camelback was a classic early American motorized bicycle built by Hendee Manufacturing Company.
CONDITION: This is a 1906 Indian Camelback believed to be in original condition with its factory paintjob in Springfield Blue. The paint shows signs of age, with some oxidation with light corrosion pushing through in some spots. The 311 cubic inch 2.25 hp air-cooled single-cylinder motor with a production number of 2877 appears to be untouched with all major components. The motor spins freely with compression. The frame and front fork are in very solid condition with no visible repairs on bends, but show minor wear from light use. Frame shows minor surface corrosion at spots, but nothing that deeply etched into the steel. Front and rear fenders are straight, with no twists, bends, or alterations, and the fender supports are still solid. The nickel plated and brass parts have transitioned into warm soft brown patina from age and show no signs of repairs. Period-correct leather Brooks B17 seat appears to be original to the motocycle. The metal parts show a light brown hue of oxidation with the original leather still covering the seat frame. Tanks show no signs of repairs or leaks, and still show original factory hand painted “INDIAN” block script. Front and rear 24” wheels are in excellent original condition and turn freely with no wobbles or bends. Tires are marked 28” x 2” “UNITED STATES TIRE COMPANY”. Tires are believed to have been replaced at some time with Coker Classic Collector’s tires. Tires, chain and ignition wires appear to have been replaced as part of a light mechanical restoration at some point. Frame neck badge appears to have been restored or replaced at some point, and the neck badge appearance is correct, but is black painted alloy and attached with stainless screws. We have made no attempt to start this bike, The motor turns over with good compression, wheels spin freely, and coaster brakes do work.
Motorcycles like this in barn fresh condition do not come around very often - this one is a true survivor.
