Lot #3045:
1¢ CAILLE BROTHERS "RED TOP LIFTER" STRENGTH TESTER PENNY ARCADE MACHINE
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/23/2026
Circa 1904. Manufactured by Caille Brothers Company, Detroit, Michigan. Classic coin-operated strength tester known as the “Red Top Lifter,” featuring a striking cast metal dial housing with bold red painted surround, embossed nickel-plated panels reading “You Are Challenged to Beat This Lift,” and a large circular strength scale with central figural strongman graphic. The machine is surmounted by the distinctive carved and painted laughing head figure, adding strong visual appeal and character typical of Caille’s more elaborate arcade machines. Operation is achieved by inserting a coin and pulling upward on the dual handles, which engage an internal spring and lever system that transfers force to the dial mechanism, registering the player’s strength via the pointer. At higher strength levels, the mechanism completes an electrical contact powered by an internal dry cell battery, activating a bell mounted within the cabinet to audibly signal a strong result, a feature designed to attract attention in arcade settings. CONDITION: The cabinet is constructed of quarter-sawn oak with paneled door and cast iron base, also showing wooden inlaid details, retaining the desirable original castings throughout. Showing an older restoration with attractive overall presentation; original castings intact; dial retains strong graphics with a replaced arrow; painted surfaces and cabinet show expected wear consistent with age and use; mechanism present and complete.
