An impressive early coin-operated strength testing machine manufactured by Mills Novelty Co., Chicago, Illinois, circa early 1900s. Housed in an original finish oak cabinet, resting on a substantial cast iron floor platform. The upper portion features the original colorful Tin lithograph plate vert rare feature to this particular machine, highly sought after, reading "Test Your Strength", displaying a 0 to 900 scale. The dial is surrounded by a twisted rope cast metal bezel with original coin entry. It also retains an outstanding example of the striking blue porcelain enamel instruction plate, reading "Test your Strength Drop Penny in the Slot", including instructions for use. The "Penny" instruction card in the middle of the blue porcelain is not original to the machine. CONDITION: In original condition with dual original condition cast iron lift handles. Shows appropriate age wear, oxidation, surface marks, and finish loss, consistent with age and use. A visually outstanding example of early American coin-operated amusement equipment, a sure hit in any coin-op, arcade, saloon, or turn-of-the-century advertising collection.
