25 OCCUPATION BRINGBACK JAPANESE ARROWS IN CASE

Lot consists of 25 Japanese arrows in a case, with other archery accessories including a quiver and tsurumaki, the rattan wheel shaped bowstring holder utilized when not in use. The arrows all have bamboo shafts and are appropriately fletched, with various head configurations: six are yanagi-ha, a common battlefield used Samurai arrow, of which four are signed, but soft and indistinct; six others are of a simplified watakusi form, the form often referred to as a "flesh terror" due to the barbs; the balance are ne target points, which are simple cylinders with tapered tips for sticking in the target. All housed in an appropriate chest with slots for the arrows with modular shelves that hold the arrows in place. PROVENANCE: Acquired from the son of a veteran who was stationed in Japan during the Occupation. During the occupation, the veteran befriended two Japanese MPs, and during their off time, the men would shoot archery together. When he returned to the states, the veteran brought the set home. CONDITION: Very good, with some signs of use to the arrows as befits use. Older arrowheads with some fine oxidation, but still sharp. Tsurumaki very good, bowstring starting to unravel on one end. Case very good with scuffs and rubs as expected, with a few pieces of wood replaced at lid.
