Introduced as a short sword for use by artillerymen and by infantry sergeants, the 1832 pattern was eventually limited to use by foot or heavy artillery. This example was produced by the Ames Manufacturing Company and bears the date 1834. Standard configuration with double-edged steel blade and a solid brass hilt that features simulated scales and pommel bearing an eagle on either side. The blade is marked "N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD" below eagle, on the obverse ricasso and "UNITED / STATES / 1834" on the reverse ricasso. CONDITION: Blade exhibits a gray patina with chocolate hue in recesses. Light edge wear with mostly legible markings. Tight brass hilt with a pleasing mellow patina. An early example with character.
