Lot consists of: (A) Large format, framed albumen or salt print photo of a Confederate soldier that has been hand colored with ink and/or oil pastels typical of the period just following the Civil War. (B) Woven wicker flag purportedly used by Hawkins as a signal / semaphore flag during the War. Typed paper tag that accompanies this lot reads: "This semaphore was used by Private John Willis Alston Hawkins, Company A, Seventeenth Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Confederate States of America, during the Civil War and at the Battle of Gettysburg. He surrendered April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse, Va. Private Hawkins was the great uncle of Mrs. J. Paul Spanogle, Chambersburg, Pa." (C) Classic Confederate D-guard style knife with an "Arkansas Toothpick" blade. Blacksmith made with a sheet iron guard and hardwood handle. Hawkins' name is stamped on the outer D-guard. Retains original leather hand-stitched scabbard with sheet brass throat and guard. CONDITION: Very Good. Colored photo not examined out of frame.
