At the heart of the American Kentucky long rifle is its barrel cut with spiral rifling grooves. In the 18th century and early 19th century cutting rifling was done on a rifling bench. This portion of the apparatus, a large 48" long hardwood cylinder with strips of wood tacked along the edges in the shape of the desired rifling, was used as the cutting guide. Using the free spinning handle at the end, the gunsmith would force the guide forward through a fixed indexing plate, transferring the desired twist into the barrel via a cutting head. CONDITION: Overall very good showing an attractive aged patina with some minor bruises. This would make a fine addition to any Kentucky rifle or gunsmithing tool display. BAS
