A GERMAN SHIELD AFTER THE CELLINI SHIELD.

Probably circa 1900, when electrotyping allowed for near-perfect duplication of famous armor pieces for commercial sale. This example is after the Cellini shield, which depicts several scenes from the life of Julius Caesar in classical style. The shield is now in Windsor Castle, but the attribution has changed, and the belief is now that the shield was made by Eliseus Libaerts, and that Cellini never manufactured any armor; in either case, the shield is incredibly impressive. The bottom of the shield has an insert element with a crowned "VR" with "DEPARMENT OF SCIENCE & ART", suggesting it once hung at a college. Interior with Ilsenburg coin and a triangular hook for hanging. CONDITION: Excellent, with some very minor age related darkness. Excellent definition, to the point of suggesting that the shield was chased, maybe on special request for the college. An excellent example, ready to display.
