Lot #2018:
A MASSIVE PARADE SWORD.
Probably late 19th Century. Oversized at 63" with a massive spaulate blade that measures 1 - 7/8" across for nearly the full length, tapering at the tip. Thinner ricasso with a pair of crescent lugs and a 7 - 3/8" leather slip with incised decorations. Elaborate blacked guard with curled quillions. Exaggerated grip measures 15" and is wrapped in leather. Raised and tiered pommel. These swords were designed to be large and gaudy for parades, and never were intended for real combat. CONDITION: Blade is largely gunmetal grey with some surface-level mossing and handling marks throughout, a few pockmarks indicative of casting. Leather is old, frozen, with some crazing and peeling and a few missing areas. A presentable example of this type.
Item Dimensions: L: 63"
