Charles Augustus Leale, a 23 year old surgeon in charge of the Wounded Commissioned Officer's war at the United States Army Genereal Hospital in Armory Square had just graduated from Bellevue Hospital Medical College six weeks prior to the assassination. On that fateful August 14th, Leale took a break from his job to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue and learning Lincoln was going to see a play of Our American Cousin he completed his duties, changed clothes, and rushed to theater to see the President. After the shooting, Leale rushed to the President's box and attended him throughout the his hospitalization. He immediately assessed the Preisdent's condition saying "His wound is mortal. It is impossible for him to recover." The photo album has Leale pictured in his full dress uniform as a Union Army surgeon and photographs of family members and other personalities. The album itself is of the highest mid-19th century bookbinder's quality. CONDITION: Book is missing it's spine, pages are gilt. Photographs are in varying condition; the one of Charles Augustus Leale is very clear. The historical importance of this album cannot be overstated and would be of inestimable value to any Civil War or Lincoln researcher. Accompanied by extensive reports on the life of Charles Augustus Leale and the assassination itself, which report was written in 1865 by Charles Augustus Leale.
