A very nice lot of Civil War letters including a letter written by Pvt. James I. Freeland, 34th NC Infantry, WIA 3 times including Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, POW April 3rd, 1865. Another is from Lt. Isaac D. Landis, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry, where he talks about mutinous officers assaulting the regiment's Captain and Colonel with a plot to terminate their commander. There is also a letter from the family of a soldier from the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers regarding their son's health after receiving a letter from him detailing the harsh conditions after the disaster at Edward's Ferry. There are also 3 newspapers dated 1861. The rest of the material is all pertaining to Fort Delaware, with about 8 pieces total, including an envelope stamped with the Fort Delaware censor. There are several letters that all start with "Fort Delaware" followed by the date, some are from the officer's barracks. One letter is from Capt. John B. Hubbard, an officer in the 48th Alabama Infantry, captured at Fussell's Mill. Another was penned by J.E. Bittle, 10th Confederate Cavalry, who talks about being imprisoned for 17 months since December 9th, 1864. Other letters detail the hardships of prison life as one reads "I have just received a letter...informing us that our brother was killed on the 6th of April [1865] in the battle of our High Bridge...may you receive comfort in knowing that you have our much to allocate the suffering of my prison life. We have no idea when we will be released." This is an excellent lot of letters that shed light on the war that is so studied and was so long ago. CONDITION: Varying with paper exhibiting blemishes typical of old paper. Most with clear writing.
