A British Napoleonic style canteen with attribution to the Battle of Isandlwana. The canteen is of wooden stave construction with iron bands around the edges. The canteen measures 7" diameter and 4" deep. One side appears to be marked "B / 856". The canteen retains traces of its original paint. Staves have not suffered from shrinking and the canteen remains sturdy. The wood stopper and iron bands remain intact with patina. Leather strap is a later period replacement and remains supple. Traces of glue around the edges suggesting an older repair. The canteen comes with a consigner provided note which states that it was purchased in 2019 in Zululand. At the time of the purchase, locals claimed the canteen was taken off of a deceased British soldier after the Battle of Isandlwana in January 1879. CONDITION: Good.
