Circa 19th century. Painting represents an 1870's game scene. Equipment is limited to catcher's glove as there were no masks. While there is no umpire behind the pitcher to date the scene, the players are wearing bib style front uniforms. The background shows the industrial factories of a city and the stadium is reminiscent of Pittsburgh. Pleasing overall with some restoration on the left hand side, two small tears measuring approximately 3/4" each and significant craqueture of the paint due to age. The canvas appears to have been restretched and reframed quite some time ago. While there have been many reproductions of scenes like these, the location of this painting has been known for up to 40 years. Truly an amazing representation of American Baseball Folk Art.
