Circa late 1840s - early 1850s. 7 - 11/16” spearpoint blade with deeply stamped hunting scene across its face, consisting of a stag pursued by 5 hounds and 2 hunters on horseback; the upper face of the blade marked with a spread winged eagle, "THE REAL I*XL KNIFE" in a riband, and the words "NONE ARE GENUINE BUT THOSE MARKED I*XL". Ricasso is marked simply "GEO. WOSTENHOLM" and "I*XL". Serpentine form frame handle of nickel silver with dark horn scales and nickel silver escutcheon with pointed ends; S-shaped guard also of nickel silver. 12 - 1/4” overall. No sheath. CONDITION: Blade with minimal sharpening, scattered light pitting, lightly cleaned. Handle with 1 pin crack on obverse, scattered surface scratches. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the Antique Bowie Knife Association, dated 1979. A rare ciphered blade Wostenholm bowie with unusual handle, possibly made at the Rockingham Works which Wostenholm left in 1848. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
