Circa 1854, large bronze medal struck to honor the men who provided assistance to the steamer SS San Francisco as she was sinking and the subsequent rescue of her passenger. Medal reverse reads, "TESTMONIAL / TO / CAPTAINS / CRIGHTON, LOWE, AND STOUFFER / OF THE SHIPS / THREE BELLS, KILBY AND ANTARCTICA / FROM THE CORPORATION / OF THE / CITY OF PHILADELPHIA. / FOR THEIR GALLANTRY IN RESCUING / THE PASSENGERS FROM THE WRECK OF / THE STEAMER / SAN FRANCISCO. / JANUARY 1854." There are later strikes of this medal, but this is an early one. CONDITION: Very good with no edge nicks or dents.
