An important presentation piece. Presentation reads "Presented to Captain Oliver Eldridge of U.S.S. Atlantic by the Officers of 3rd Regt, N.H. Volunteers for his gentlemanly and courteous treatment during the passage from Annapolis Md. to Port Royal S.C. from Oct. 15th to Nov. 7th, 1861. Port Royal S.C. Jany 1st, 1862." Beautifully detailed engraving includes the steamship Atlantic on the reverse equipped with two masts, a smoke stack and a side wheel paddle. The Atlantic was not a navel ship but was hired to transport troops. 22 toz. An elegant piece from the Ray Bentley Collection.
