Circa 1830s. 8 - 3/8" heavy clip point blade marked on its ricasso "C. CONGREVE, SHEFFIELD" (partially illegible), and on its face "CELEBRATED HUNTING KNIFE" in a cartouche. Swelled center nickel silver handle frame with coffin shaped end, ebony scales and "crown" style guard unique to Congreve. 13 - 1/4 overall length. No sheath. CONDITION: The blade with little or no sharpening and a few scattered spots, handle scales with a few small chips and 2 cracks on the reverse side. A first rate early Sheffield bowie knife by famed maker Charles Congreve, with a guard design that is fragile and rarely seen. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
