Circa 1835-1838. 8-5/16” clip point blade stamped on ricasso "I*XL, W (crown) R, G. WOSTENHOLM & SON CELEBRATED CAST STEEL BOWIE KNIFE" and on the blade's face "WARRANTED OF THE BEST QUALITY". Rosewood handle with swell center shape and coffin end, nickel silver ball-end guard, and fancy ferrule with clover and rose motif. 13 - 1/4” overall. No sheath. CONDITION: Blade in excellent condition, slightly used with scattered spotting, the handle with lengthwise crack on reverse and shorter crack on obverse. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the Antique Bowie Knife Association, dated 1980, which states that the handle is a replacement. This is a very early Wostenholm bowie, rarely encountered, and similar in style to some James Rodgers knives of the same era. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
