Fir two other examples of this 1650-1700 pattern, see 233.S and 234.S on page 139 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. The straight double-edged broadsword blade has 2 center fullers on each side. Inside both fullers on the left side is the marking "CLEMENS BRACH" and own the other side in both fullers is "IN SOLINGEN" along with a makers mark at the top of the ricasso. The open style basket features junction plates inscribed with double-line decoration. The domed pommel has three engraved lines dividing each quarter. Wood grip. CONDITION: Blade shows retains a grey patina with some areas of pitting, tip slightly rounded. Blade markings crisp and clear. Hilt retains a spotted grey patina and shows some losses to junction plate on right side and a break to the plate on the opposite side. Grip shows wear and an age crack, is wrapped with strand of braided sinew. Blade is tight to hilt. A very scarce early pattern.
