Circa 1830s. 10 - 1/4" early style Sheffield made folding sword dirk with relief ground blade, marked on ricasso "W (crown) R, A.W. SPIES SCIENTIFIC SELF DEFENDER" (portions illegible). Stag handled scales with birdseye pins, diamond shaped shield on obverse and unusual arrowhead shaped shield on reverse, grooved nickel silver guards on both ends of handle. 15 - 3/8" overall length when open. Leather replacement sheath appears to be of the period. CONDITION: Blade with light sharpening and scattered spotting, an attractive finish. Blade and latch pins have been replaced. Spies was a New York dealer in military goods, few knives are found bearing his mark and all are early examples of the 1830s. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
