Blade retaining good traces of early etching with a human figure holding what appears to be an axe. The crescentic blade measures 9 - 1/2", central spike 13 - 1/2", engraved fluke 3 - 3/4". CONDITION: Halberd retains what appears to be the original haft with brass star tack decorations and old museum tag. The fluke is struck with a makers mark. Halberd is probably Italian. Faceted pole with spike at base, appears to be the original. Overall length 93". A good early etched halberd. PROVENANCE: FORMER COLLECTION OF THE NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART. Purchased by the museum from French & Co., Inc., that came from Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, November 24 1939 as lot 118.
