1898, SWISS: B.H. Abrahams of St. Croix, Switzerland, began building Britannia and Imperial music boxes in 1898. The large Britannia instruments like this example are very rare, and to have one with an original base, rarer yet. Playing 72cm (28 - 1/4") discs across a duplex comb providing a robust tone and sound. Britannia music boxes are known for their bright, often "loud", sound and among collectors it is either pleasing or strident. CONSIDERATIONS: The walnut cabinet has a deep rich finish, with applied carvings, turned columns, and mixed wood inlays. With minor areas of wear, light surface scratches, from use, but overall the piece is strikingly beautiful. Mechanically sound, no repairs or missing teeth to the comb, and operating as expected with a coin. Comes with 10 discs.
