This German sword cane measures 40-7/8" overall. The straight tapered double edged blade has faceted convex faces on both sides with some scroll engraving and small fullers near the top. The handle and scabbard are made of wood with brass mounts and ferrules. On one side there is an engraved and decorated 12" rule along with scroll and floral incised designs. The other side of the handle is nearly carved with the initials "IS / 1785 / FE". The brass mounts are also engraved; on one side to match the rule and on the other side with a crossed hammer and pliers. The scabbard is also engraved with foliate scrolls and floral motifs. CONDITION: Very good. Blade retains a grey patina with some darker spots, edges are sharp and engraving is crisp. Wooden handle and scabbard retain a dry surface with some scattered age cracks and a couple minor slivers missing on the edge on the right side. Brass retains a dark, unpolished brown patina. A unique and decorative sword cane. PROVENANCE: The bottom of one side retains an early ink inscription "Inv. No: 284". From the collection of Stephan Mautner (1877-1944), who was a Viennese businessman and artist. He and his wife were deported to Auschwitz concentration camp and died in 1944. It was then passed on to their son in Washington, D.C. and through the family before being acquired by the current consignor. DMG
