Mississippian 1000 - 6000 B.P. Likely origin Arkansas. Inside the massive head on this bowl are small pellets placed there by the ancient maker. The true function of these pellets is unknown, but the intention seems to be to provide noise, by rattling, perhaps during ceremony. Because of ground shifting and movement over the last 1000 years, large pottery vessels like this are almost always damaged. The head of this vessel has been reattached to the bowl and professionally restored. Restoration can be seen on the back of the head and covering a 4” section of the bowl rim.

Item Dimensions: H. 5 - 1/2" x L. 4" x 7" Dia.
HUMAN "RATTLEHEAD" POTTERY BOWL.
