Measures 15 - 5/16" from tip of kissaki to munemachi. Shinogi zukuri form with iori mune. Ubu mumei nakago with single mekugi-ana, punched. Iriyama gata nakagojiri; yasurime obscured by oxidation but looks to be kiri. Blade is not quite in full polish with hada obscured; looks like it may be mokume. Suguha hamon with ko-maru boshi. Iron tsuba depicting a rooster, with some traces of gold visible, and histuana for kozuka and kogai. Fuchi and kashira made of iron, with fuchi having a design of a beetle on florals, menuki in the form of rabbits. Silk tsuka-ito, rayskin same with multiple textures, pointing to multiple panels. Ribbed gold-washed copper habaki with catscratches. Simple black lacquer saya with slot for kozuka and kurikata, both vacant. Right side of the saya with an applied paper with Japanese characters, mostly faded. CONDITION: Blade is out of polish with a some finer details obscured but a reasonably visible hamon with nie and nioi visible. Some spots of ware and a burst fukure under the habaki. Extremity of kissaki is damaged. Some mossing and patination, especially towards yokote, probably from moisture infiltrating the saya at some point. Fuchi, kashira, and tsuba with rich chocolate patina. Tsuka ito is tight. Saya has lifting and crazing of the lacquer throughout, exposing bare wood. A reasonable example of a shinshinto wakizashi.
