A wonderful interior view of a Parisien salon, this work was possibly exhibited at the Salon de Lyon, 1881, no. 485 (as Le Spleen). The scene is possibly related to "Le Spleen de Paris", a collection of 51 short prose poems by Charles Baudelaire published posthumously in 1869. Baudelaire’s prose poems were based on Parisian contemporary life. Note: Current attribution of this painting is undetermined. In 2008, this work sold at the Hotel de Ventes Horta, Brussels (1/14/08, lot 168) as a work by Jean-Aime Saint-Cyr Girier (French, 1837-1911), however, in 2014, Sotheby's sold the same painting as a work by Georges de Saint-Cyr (11/6/14, lot 84). The Sotheby's catalogue references the above exhibition information. The more recent attribution by Sotheby's and the signature examination indicates a more likely attribution to Georges de Saint-Cyr.
