Lot consists of three original Booth cartes-de-visites, one copy from the Meserve collection, five reference books, including “John Wilkes Booth Himself” by Gutman, and three pamphlets. CDVs are (A) Gutman #29 with a C.D. Fredericks stamp indicating this is a from-life view. CONDITION: Very good, but scattered thin spotting in the lighter areas. (B) Gutman #21, Decker, Cleveland b/m. CONDITION: Good, light with spotting. (C) Gutman #22, no b/m. CONDITION: Very good, nice tones. (D) Gutman #30. Modern copy with Meserve collection citation on reverse. The books are (E) Gutman, John Wilkes Booth Himself. Scarce, essential reference on Booth photographs. CONDITION: Fair. Tears to dust jacket. Lattimer name inside cover. Binding slightly loose. (F) Mahoney, Sketches of Tudor Hall and the Booth Family. CONDITION: Good. (G) Kauffman, American Brutus. CONDITION: Like new. (H) Wilson, “John Wilkes Booth, Fact and Fictions of Lincoln’s Assassination.” CONDITION: Fair. Tears to dust jacket. (I) Philip Van Doren Stern, “The Man Who Killed Lincoln.” CONDITION: Fair. Losses to dj. With these are two printing blocks for images of Boston Corbett and Booth seated with cane; two pamphlets on Booth’s escape, and a 1925 reprint of Mortimer Blake’s April 23, 1865 sermon on Booth and human depravity. An interesting collection given Dr. Lattimer’s interest in Presidential history and assassinations.
