(American, 1907-1984). 25'' x 33'' framed. SLL. Perhaps reminiscent of a Chagall, this painting is of a man clinically observing a whale in the foaming sea. A ship can be seen in the background. Appealing colors of green and coral. Nicely striated wood frame in a light color. Prestopino, born in New York's Little Italy and educated at the National Academy of Design, was influenced by the Ashcan painters and their depiction of urban life. In 1934 he summered at the prestigious MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, N.H., where he would later serve as director (in 1954). Throughout his career he taught painting, including at the Brooklyn Museum School (1946-51). He was artist-in-residence at Michigan State University in 1960. His works were exhibited widely, including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, and the Whitney Museum of Modern Art.
