Unusual and highly decorative possibly miniature display sample or demonstration safe of distinctive arched “tombstone” form, prominently lettered across the upper façade “J. SCOTT’S PATENT ASBESTOS.” Finished in high-gloss black with elaborate green and gold hand-painted pinstriping and ornamental scroll decoration. The heavy arched door is fitted with brass-toned operating hardware, ring pull and substantial hinges, opening to reveal a finished interior with wood floor. Raised on four rounded feet. The reference to Scott’s patented asbestos construction relates to the period development of fire-resistant safe technology, when insulating materials were incorporated between the walls of safes to protect their contents from intense heat. An exceptionally visual example of miniature safe construction, combining industrial history with elaborate decorative craftsmanship. The unusual arched architectural form and prominent patent lettering make this an especially appealing piece for collectors of salesman’s samples, antique safes, banking memorabilia and early fireproofing technology. With key.
