First quarter 19th century, Boscawen New Hampshire. The arched hood with molded cornice surmounted by pierced fretwork joined to reeded plinths. Each with brass ball and spire finial above the tombstone door enclosing the painted dial with moon phase decorated movement in the arch above the Roman numeral chapter ring and sweep seconds subsidiary dial, centering time and strike apertures. The dial marked "Joseph Chadwick" in Gothic script, all centered by patriotic gilt shields with red and white stripe and blue field decoration. The brass eight day, weight driven movement striking on a coil. The bonnet is flanked by free standing reeded colonettes joined to the inlaid cherry case. The rectangular molded waist door with rosewood crossbanding, flanked by engaged reeded quarter columns with brass capitals and bases. The crossbanded, molded box base raised on delicate French feet with scalloped returns and apron. Clock is accompanied by original pair of copper clad weights, three finials, and winder. Provenance: Acquired by Hannah Leach born 1789 Manchester Massachusetts, to daughter Hannah Leach Hilton, born 1908, to her daughter Elizabeth Ann Richards born 1831, to her son Frederick Richards Smith born 1858, Boston Massachusetts, the grandson of Polly Parker Smith. The Parkers, one of the founding families of Reading Massachusetts, namesake of the Parker Tavern. To daughter Marion Hilton Smith born 1903, Reading Massachusetts to her niece, Polly Parker Stembridge Weaver born 1921, to her daughter, the current owner, Elizabeth Smith Weaver-Radcliffe born 1957 of Portland Maine. The clock is 93" tall and is 9" deep, the throat width is 14". The case retains old if not original cleaned surface with honey brown patina, inlays intact, original feet. Original fretwork and finials, fretwork with small repair. Movement maintained and cleaned. Very good overall.
