This horn has a tapered curved body of about 16-3/4". The cone-shaped spout has an incised band just below the tip. The spout is followed by a faceted section with an inscription on five of them, reading "CARVED BY / EDWARD / BOURKE / May 7 / 1868". There are 3 engraved and shaded bands of geometric designs. Above this is a large and detailed engraved stone church, to the right a robed clergyman wearing a papal hat is standing at the gates. There are 5 detailed sailing vessels with 4 engraved seagulls flying overhead. There is also an engraved scene of a man standing near a fenced in statue, possibly at a cemetery. The wooden plug is chip-carved and features a large spiral design around the iron loop for strap attachment. The plug retains old green paint and is retained by a series of wooden pins. This is a very interesting and unusual powder horn from the second half of the 19th century. CONDITION: Very good overall showing some minor scattered marks and a light honey patina overall. Some edge wear to painted plug. A minor hairline crack at the spout. DMG
