John Harris was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps on 23 April 1814 and promoted to first lieutenant two months later. He joined the Marines of the USS Guerriere under the command of Commodore John Rodgers that summer at Charlestown, Maryland, and served with the forces that opposed the British advance on Baltimore. On January 7, 1859 he was appointed Colonel Commandant of the Marine Corps. He died in office 1864. Comes with signed CDV, Mexican War era colorized image, and a large United Spanish War Veterans 1898 Medal and cross beautifully framed but nothing to do with Harris. CONDITION: CDV and colorized images are good, with the frames showing handling marks all around. Framed medal and cross are in great condition, matted frame is in fine condition.
