Lot consists of letters and documents ex-Lattimer collection. (A) Interesting 1855 ALS by Winfield Scott noting that when Congress reappointed Washington to his old rank of full General, Pres. Adams had them abolish the rank of Lieutenant General so that Hamilton could not be appointed to that rank. (B) 1856 Bounty Land Grant for 160 acres to “Elisha Morris, Sergeant, Captain Hudson’s Company New York Militia, New York Frontier Disturbances.” This refers to service in the War of 1812 and is accompanied by a copy of Morris’s 1858 will and 1859 affidavits enabling his executors to sell the land grant. (C) January 1885 ALS James R. O’Beirne to Gen. Joseph B. Carr asking him to get a job as a stone cutter on the Capitol for an “Irish American Republican Issue of this city, a most particular friend of mine.” O’Beirne was a fighting officer, wounded in action and recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was Provost Marshall of Washington when Lincoln was assassinated and heavily involved in pursuit of the assassin and conspirators. Ex-Lattimer Collection. CONDITION: All very good.
