Lot consists of 4 items related to Dr. Philip Syng Physick (1768-1837,) renowned Philadelphia medical figure, physician, surgeon, lecturer, and inventor of medical devices and surgical techniques. Graduated University of Pennsylvania 1785, studied in London and Edinburgh, worked at the Philadelphia Hospital, professor of surgery and anatomy at University of Pennsylvania Medical School 1805-1831. Invented the stomach pump, use of absorbable sutures, etc. (A) Lock of hair, preserved on the back of a round card trimmed from an admission ticket to a course in practical anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania, certainly one of Syng’s own courses. CONDITION: Excellent. (B) Engraving “Philip Syng Physick, M.D.” Philadelphia, Childs & Inman. Decr. 1831. CONDITION: Excellent. (C) Medical bill to Col. Lewis Morris and members of his family in January and February 1806, with note of receipt in March at bottom. CONDITION: Excellent. (D) Autograph note signed to another Doctor asking him to give a lecture in his place, “Dear Doctor, I am so much indisposed this morning that I am convinced unless I remain within doors I shall be confined to my bed…” signed “P. Physick 1/2 past 8 o clock Monday Morng.” Physic’s own health was precarious, largely due to contracting Yellow Fever in 1797 during one of Philadelphia’s outbreaks. PROVENANCE: Ex-Lattimer Collection. CONDITION: Excellent. Physick’s patients included notables such as Dolley Madison, Chief Justice John Marshall, and Benjamin Rush. (D) is accompanied by a James Spence Authentication Full Letter of Authenticity.
