Lot consists of assorted manuscript material from the Dr. John K. Lattimer collection: (A) 1828 note by Daniel Webster (American lawyer and statesman, 1782-1852) to W.W. Esq. regarding paying off a note to John Taylor. CONDITION: Very good with tape remains on rev. (B) 1823 letter in German from Alexander Van Humboldt, 1769-1859, geographer, naturalist, explorer, early observer of human effects on the environment, the “father of ecology” and “father of environmentalism.” CONDITION: Very good. (C) 1848 letter by Cyrus W. Field, financier and businessman, founder of the American Telegraph Co., 1819-1892, to A.L. Harrison on financial dealings with firm of Croswell and Van Dyke. CONDITION: Excellent. (D) Stephen Jumel docketed 1805 debenture on hogsheads of coffee imported by Jumel & Desobry on the Brig Eagle. Jumel, 1754-1832, made his fortune in the wine business after slave revolts drove him from his Haiti coffee plantations. He owned the Morris-Jumel mansion. His widow married Aaron Burr. CONDITION: Good. Paper tape repairs to edges on reverse. (E) 1815 receipt for pay to William Work of Newburyport for recording births, deaths, and boundary lines of the town. Ex-Lattimer Collection. CONDITION: Excellent.
