The Afghanistan Medal was awarded to members of the British and Indian armies who served during the Second Afghan War, 1878-1880. The lot consists of: (A) Afghanistan Medal engraved in upright serif capitals to "1266. PTE W. HOLLAND. 2/8TH REGT". Holland does not immediately appear in the records but the 8th (The King's) Regiment of Foot fought at Peiwar Kotal, and the clasp on this medal reflects that. (B) Afghanistan Medal engraved in upright serif capitals to "2098. PTE D. JOHNSTON. 70TH FOOT". Johnston does not immediately appear in the records but the 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot fought during the Second Afghan War with the Kandahar column. The medal displays the Kabul clasp. (C) Afghanistan Medal engraved in upright serif capitals to "5252. GR J. HARLEY. G/4TH R.A.". James Harley is listed in included records as a Gunner in the 4th Brigade, Royal Artillery. The medal displays the Ahmed Khel clasp. (D) Afghanistan Medal engraved in upright serif capitals to "1823. PTE W. MACKNEY. 81ST FOOT.". Mackney does not immediately appear in the records but the 81st Regiment of Foot (Loyal Lincoln Volunteers) was assigned to The Peshawar Valley Field Force, and fought in the Battle of Ali Masjid and the clasp on this medal reflects that. (E) Afghanistan Medal engraved in sloping serif capitals to "1472, PTE. J. HUDSON , 2/7TH FOOT". Hudson does not immediately appear in the records but the 7th Regiment of Foot fought at the Battle of Kandahar, and the clasp on this medal reflects that. CONDITION: Medals display light wear. 2 with info tags on reverse. Good overall.
