Lot consists of (A) "Return of the officers and soldiers of Capt. Robt. Hagans compy Third Jersey Regt who went on the Expedition to Staten Island August 23rd 1777." Lists 4 officers, 6 sergeants, and 10 men with remarks. CONDITION: Good. Some fading to ink, but legible. (B) Provision return for Col. Holmes' battalion of Salem County militia at Woodbridge, October 13 through October 22. CONDITON: Excellent. (C) Feb. 12, 1776, Receipt of pay from Capt. John Holmes for gun repair of Holmes' own weapon and "Repars of a Jarsey Gun." CONDITION: Good. Fading to itemized list of work done, but legible. (D) Letter dated Trenton 13 May 1779 by William Livingston, Governor of New Jersey, to Col. Neilson. Thinks the number of militia called out will not be sufficient but the Council is unwilling to call up more and advises Neilson to post himself at Elizabeth Town and other officers as he sees fit. He advises consulting with Major General Dickinson and has sent orders for a some light horse troops as well (not included.) Even after the "forage war" of 1777 New Jersey remained the target of British foraging and raiding parties. (E) Amusing tongue-in-cheek letter from Lt. Col. De Hart, 2nd New Jersey, to Colonels Dayton, Ogden and Barbor relaying prices of supplies at Newwark, where he was recently posted. Starting off with high-flown rhetoric and observations on the human condition, he announces his position as "Governor of the Garrison" and "Viscount Newark &c &c &c besides Commander in Chief of this great place both Continental and Militia," alluding to Julius Caesar and then finally getting down to business by reporting the current prices of pigs, poultry, peas, beans, etc. CONDITION: Very good. Minor stains. Fully legible.
