Lot consists of: (A) July 8, 1779 letter penned to Col John Davis from a John Cox in Philadelphia announcing his appointment by Congressional Committee to receive quartermaster returns from military outposts. (B) April 28th 1777 letter soliciting a return of numbers of men enlisted in the company of a Capt J.H. Laws from a M. Gish. (C) July 5, 1778 note from a Joseph Cone mentioning a General and wagons in Baltimore.(D) November 19, 1779 letter from a Maj Popham to Gen Clinton regarding a brigade quartermaster. Letter was written in Pompton which is most likely the area near the present day Newark-Pompton Turnpike, once called the "King's Highway". It was one of America's major Revolutionary Highways and thoroughfares. It took Revolutionary War soldiers from West Point and the Hudson Highlands to Trenton and points south. (E) March 5, 1779 letter from "C. Petitt" to Col Clement Biddle. Pettit is most likely Charles Petitt. Pettit served as a personal secretary to Governor William Franklin from 1772 to 1774. From 1776 to 1778 Pettit held the office of provincial secretary. In 1778, Pettit was appointed deputy quartermaster general, this came with a commission as a colonel in the Continental Army. Pettit kept the accounts for the corps from then until his resignation in 1781. (F) March 1779 better from Charlres Pettit, deputy Quartermaster General mentioning a "Col Morgan". Unknown recipient. (G) June 22, 1777 letter to the Commissary General from T. Pickering, Adjutant General for "three days provisions to be delivered this night, the the men may draw & cook them, ready to march in the morning". CONDITION: Very fine to very good. All letters exhibit age toning and some stains scattered throughout. BRM.
